My Morning Routine
Water - I read in the Cameron Diaz The Body book - that when you wake up in the morning your body is like a wilted flower that desperately needs water. I mean, it makes sense if you think about how much water you (hopefully) drink throughout the day and then you just go 7-9 hours without any. The very first thing I do in the morning, after I brush my teeth of course, is chug a glass of room temperature water. I feel like this turns my brain on and wakes me up even more than my cup of coffee.
Coffee - After, and only after, I’ve chugged my water, I’ll make myself a coffee. Nothing fancy, I use just a regular old Keurig to make it. I love the HEB Cafe Ole Texas Pecan coffee pods and mix in some flavor of NutPods creamer. My two absolute favorite are the Toasted Marshmallow and the Cinnamon.
Meditate - After I make my coffee, I sit at my desk and find a quick 5 min meditation on Youtube. I like this one and this one specifically. The reason I sit at my desk is I find that I’m more likely to do it since I’m already sitting in a comfortable chair and will be journaling right after.
Journal - I’ve always wanted to start a journaling practice but for whatever reason, I had a hard time nailing down a time of day where I could stop what I was doing and “journal”. I also need complete silence to journal and I find that doing it first thing in the morning gives me clarity and allows thoughts to just flow out of my brain. The journal that I use is this one and I like it a low. I like to just randomly open it up to a page to use the prompt rather than go by season which the book suggests.
Movement - I use to never be a morning workout person, but now it’s my favorite time of day to do it. Now that I work from home full time, it’s easier to catch an early workout class and then come home and start working, without having to worry about “getting ready” to go into the office. Working out in the morning has been instrumental for my focus throughout the day and helps me to feel calm and relaxed. Plus, when I am done with work for the day, I truly can enjoy my rest and relaxation time without having to worry about wrapping up to make it to a class on time.
